Five Guys began in 1986 in Arlington, Virginia, when Jerry and Janie Murrell encouraged their sons to start a business instead of going to college. They opened a simple burger joint serving hand-formed burgers and fresh-cut fries cooked in peanut oil.
Throughout the '80s and '90s, the Murrell family perfected their approach, expanding to several locations as demand grew. In 2003, they began franchising, quickly selling over 300 units in just 18 months and gaining national media attention.
In 2021, Five Guys expanded to Australia, where they now have five restaurants and are growing rapidly under the franchisee Blue Coral Concepts.
