Zila is developing and commercializing oral cancer detection technology, as well as equipment used to prevent and treat periodontal disease. Its lead cancer diagnostic product is the ViziLite Plus test kit, which uses a chemiluminescent light source to detect cancerous oral lesions. Despite its FDA approval as an adjunctive diagnostic (to be used along with other methods), the ViziLite has yet to fully take off in the US. Other products include the periodontal scalers, probes, fluoride rinses, and cleaning equipment for office and home use. After experiencing financial difficulties, Zila was acquired by private drugmaker TOLMAR Holding in 2009.
