Reliable, dependable management who generously support staff with an open, nurturing teaching environment and encourage professional training and development.
Cons
High expectations can be challenging for new teachers, along with the daily challenges of living in China.
With nearly three decades of experience in K-12 education, both in Canada and with Canadian education in international contexts, I am thrilled to be working with the CINEC Group. This is an organization that invests in people and their potential, and prioritizes education over business concerns.
Cons
The only con is not about the organization itself, but in my own circumstances. Given the nature of my role and my geographical location, I spend a lot of time communicating and interacting with the schools remotely, which is far less preferable to me that more face to face engagement.
-Very collegial, professional teaching staff that helped me tremendously to develop my craft as a teacher.
-Teaching hours are significantly less than most international schools in China or BC public schools, so it is much easier to achieve a good work-life balance.
-Ample opportunities for professional development with individual pro-d funding, school organized pro-d, CINEC organized pro-d, and the BC Ministry of Education also organizes an annual pro-d event.
-Admin is supportive and fair.
-Overall, students are quite academically strong and hardworking. They regularly outscore domestic BC students in the standardized BC wide math assesments, and generally score just as well or better than Canadian students in the standardized provincial English assessments.
-BC schools in Shanghai have beautiful, modern school facilities that are conveniently situation in the Huangpu and Xuhui districts.
-Chance to cheaply and conveniently travel throughout China and surrounding countries during the many holidays.
Cons
-Not everyone is able to adapt well to different cultural expectations in China. People who take a flexible approach and don't try imposing their own cultural expectations on China tend to adapt very well.
