Mission-driven startup building open communication on Matrix

Pros

Transparency, little politics, no BS, getting to work on open source, ambitious company trying to decentralise communication away from the big players, and build a new communications industry.

Cons

Commercial open source development is hard at the best of times, and Matrix being an open ecosystem makes it even harder: Element donates lots of time to grow Matrix, and deliberately helps its competitors by doing so. This makes revenue much harder than it might be otherwise.

Great culture!

Pros

The culture is great, the founders care about employees but like really care about employees. They understand the "take care of your employees and they will take care of your customers/clients". The benefits are pretty good for a start up. Colleagues are nice, passionate and dedicated. Transparency is a big thing at Element.

Cons

Transparency is great as we are informed of everything that is happening. The good stuff like the bad stuff.

Excellent place to work

Pros

Management genuinely cares about culture and employee wellbeing, and puts it at the heart of how the company functions. The work is interesting, varied and has the potential to be of real wider benefit so there's a sense of satisfaction from that. Work is fast-paced but generally not unreasonable; 'crunch' and long days are mostly avoided. Hiring is done carefully so people are almost universally smart, pleasant, and easy to work with. There's also a real sense of mission and most people enjoy the work, so negativity and moaning are at a minimum.

Cons

Not many. Company is still quite engineering-led culturally, and the contributions of non-engineers are often not recognised in the same way. Fairly small company with quite a flat structure so, depending on your function, there can be few opportunities to progress especially if you want to take on people management responsibilities.
