Pros

You will work with some of the most intelligent and talented people in the U.K. The company has huge global reach. Opportunity to work on some of the most challenging and interesting major projects in the UK and around the world. Flexible working generally (project dependent) Can buy up to 3 weeks extra holiday a year (through salary sacrifice) Generally a good environment to start your career. Strong support for graduates.

Cons

Salary is well below market value and yearly increases completely stagnant. No bonus scheme for vast majority of staff. ~90% of the graduate intake leaves after a few years when they receive better offers from clients/competitors. Upper management are completely dismissive of this and have the attitude they would rather hire replacements than focus on keeping talent within the business. Lower management will listen but powerless to do anything. Line management is completely hit or miss as the company pushes juniors into the role. No long term, strategic focus on aligning people to projects where their skills and development needs are. Expected to work back lost time due to family emergencies.

Pros

1. Professional Growth Opportunities There is strong exposure to large-scale infrastructure and engineering projects. You gain experience in project coordination, documentation management, reporting, and cross-functional communication. 2. Collaborative Environment Most teams are knowledgeable and willing to support when asked. There are opportunities to work with engineers, project managers, and operations teams, which builds strong business acumen. 3. Stability & Reputation AtkinsRéalis has a strong global presence and brand credibility in the engineering and consulting industry. That name carries weight on a resume. 4. Leadership Opportunities (If You Seek Them) There are opportunities to get involved beyond your job description (e.g., EAC Chair, safety initiatives, culture committees), which helps build leadership skills. 5. Structured Processes Clear systems for project documentation, billing, and compliance — helpful for developing operational discipline.

Cons

1. Growth Can Be Slow Without Advocacy Career advancement often requires proactive networking and internal positioning. It’s not always automatic. 2. Communication Gaps Across Teams Depending on the project, communication between departments can sometimes feel siloed, requiring extra follow-up. 3. Workload Fluctuation Project-based work can mean periods of high demand followed by slower times, which can feel inconsistent. 4. Limited Visibility for Support Roles Administrative and project support roles sometimes require extra effort to demonstrate strategic value.
