Pretty unremarkable. Could've been so much more - Bar Staff Delfont Mackintosh Theatres Employee Review

Pros

Get to see West End shows for free / heavy discount. Co-workers are usually creatives, so lots of interesting people work there. Location in the heart of London.

Cons

Accepting tips was a sackable offence when I was there. The bare minimum staff were employed at each theatre, so finding last-minute cover was difficult. Don't do this job if you like having Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays free! A lot of your overtime goes straight back to HMRC too. Contracts end and begin from show to show, so even if you've been at particular theatre for years, you won't get any recognition / rights as a long-term employee.

Pros

Very lovely coworkers who genuinely cared and helped out. Pay always arrived on time and was paid weekly. Work while intense was relatively easy and if you were fortunate to be at one of the quieter and smaller theatres, you had a lot of downtime. At my theatre at least 95% of guests were reasonable, good people. Thorough onboarding and training.

Cons

No real opportunity for progression. High turnover but that's to be expected in this industry. Pay was quite low and depending on the position you were assigned you had either a nice easy shift or you were run off your feet. Unnecessarily strict on bits and bobs of uniform such as socks. Also, had a friend in the company who worked for one of the theatres under management for about 3 years, when her show closed, they ruthlessly laid off everyone in the building right before a Monday evening shift which spread around the wider company employees like wildfire, moreso because that theatre was notorious for being the hardest to work at, so it's really the luck of the draw. Customers can be quite high strung and entitled, but that's to be expected from this sort of role. I worked in theatre right after the pandemic but I will say that behaviour has improved since then.
