Pros

My time at HCRS has been such a fulfilling experience. This is a place where compassion meets professionalism—and where people really care, not just about the clients we serve, but about each other too. What I love most is the mission-driven culture. Every day, you get to see the real impact of your work on people’s lives—whether it's helping someone through a crisis, supporting someone on their wellness journey, or just being part of a system that believes in dignity, inclusion, and unlimited potential for all people. The flexibility and understanding here are huge. Leadership is human. They know that staff are people with real lives, and they do a wonderful job supporting work-life balance. There’s also real emphasis on growth: lots of opportunities to learn new skills, explore different departments, and move up or over into new roles that fit your evolving goals. (I personally started in one department and felt so supported through a transition to a position I love even more.) The people here are incredible—passionate, smart, funny, kind, down to earth, and deeply dedicated. You’ll find some of the most genuine coworkers you’ve ever met. There’s a collaborative spirit across all our locations and departments, and so many people go above and beyond to support both the mission and their team. At HCRS, I always feel like my work matters, my voice is heard, and I’m part of something bigger than myself. If you care about making a difference, want to work with a kind and thoughtful team, and value an ever-improving culture that respects both people and purpose—HCRS is an amazing place to be.

Cons

Like many nonprofits, resources can feel stretched thin at times—especially when staffing is low. Some materials and processes could use updating or streamlining, but leadership is aware and consistently working toward improvements. The size and scope of the agency can make it finnicky to navigate collaboration across such a broad area, but there’s a genuine and consistent effort to build better collaboration and transparency.

Pros

Community mental health is very challenging but HCRS has amazing benefits, pay, time off, and other resources for employees. Mid-level supervisors do a great job supporting their staff and supporting not only the client’s but the employee’s mental health.

Cons

Community mental health typically employed the least experienced providers to work with the highest acuity clients. Community mental health is NOT just providing therapy. A majority of clients struggle with generational poverty, housing instability, food instability, discrimination (often due to their mental health challenges), and generational trauma.
