Pros

As a member of the faculty and staff at Khan Lab School, you get to participate in the future of education, whether it's figuring out what mastery should look like on the ground level or experimenting with various pedagogical techniques to help students be more self-paced in their learning. Recently, Khan Lab School helped with creation of Khanmigo through Khan Academy which was an exciting experience for faculty and staff. Sal is a true visionary and cares deeply about the school. What isn't mentioned enough on here is that the students at Khan Lab School are truly amazing young people. KLS is expressly NOT a hyper competitive environment like some other Bay Area independent schools. Instead, students rally together and support each other in "navigating their own paths." It's not uncommon for juniors and seniors to hold study sessions with younger students for the SAT or for Foothill College classes taught at the school. This kind of mentality is commonplace at the school because we believe in peer-to-peer learning to help students progress at their own pace, both academically and socially and emotionally. Finally, the teachers are amazing and the administration is supportive of their growth, whether it's paying for professional development opportunities (sometimes going well above $500), offering a free lunch every day, or giving competitive salaries that are benchmarked against other area independent schools. Teachers also have autonomy to help Sal's vision become a reality and experimentation is encouraged as part of the Lab School mentality.

Cons

As a young, start-up school, sometimes systems are not as well developed as at other places but that's a small price to pay to be at a supportive and nurturing independent school that cares deeply about its students.

Pros

Faculty and admin that care and give teachers the space to teach the best way they can, with students and families that are engaged and creating a wonderful community

Cons

It is a new-ish school, so there were still some moving parts while I was there. Be prepared to wear many hats!

Pros

- Strong culture around learning, transparency, collaboration, and giving back to the world - Staff and student families are filled with brilliant and kind people - Part-time teachers from various industry backgrounds are common, which gives our students extra exposure to the world of learning and applications - Influential guests are frequently invited for fireside chats with Sal Khan - Campus is expanding quickly - Khan is a well-known brand

Cons

- Like any startup org, all hands on deck is frequented, and can be messy - Leadership is not precise with its road map, which leaves many people confused - Under-budgeted, with no plans to develop a gifts and donations outreach team - Relatively high attrition for a school, which can be tough on students and colleagues - Underpaid for Bay Area standard of living - No lunch is provided
