Pros

Everyone at Mighty Engine has an interesting personality. The stress involved in a small marketing firm is offset by the joking around and the sense of camaraderie. There was, at least in my web developer position, lots of room for self-management, which was nice. A very flexible company in general, especially with things like doctors' appointments. At Mighty Engine, there seems to be a sort of trial period where management seems scary at first... but after getting to know you, they place a lot of trust in you and listen to your opinions. Employees are valued for their personalities, which shows in moments like birthday lunches. Also, it's a good place to work if you're worried about being too much of a weirdo for an office job :~)

Cons

Limited opportunities for technical mentorship — which is just 75% "con" because it just meant I had to learn how to self-educate. Also, design work seemed to be a bit stressful and involves staying late.

Pros

Small shop, interesting/socially-conscious projects, never any day-to-day monotony.

Cons

Need more for-profit clients to compensate for all of the non-profits that aren't able to pay as much.

Pros

Management was pretty flexible about time off, but probably because I wasn't that important to very many projects. Management was kind when they were in a good mood.

Cons

Pretty much everyone stayed late most nights. The design process here was subject to the seemingly patternless whims of the CEO. The CEO did a lot of badmouthing former employees. It was hard to develop my skills there because since the company is constantly in catch-up mode, management doesn't feel like they can entrust entry-level employees with novel projects. When Mighty Engine is in catch-up mode, it just makes the most sense for the more experienced employees to take on the regular responsibilities. This is why Mighty Engine is seemingly made up of 3-4 longtime employees who seem to have Stockholm Syndrome with the CEO, plus a few junior employees who cycle through the company within 18 months.
