Pros

#1 is by far the quality of people you will work with. Their hiring standards are high. #2 Awesome benefits...retirement, health insurance and incredible FOP Lodge. #3 The City of Springfield (people). People really have the officer's back in town and plenty of cool things to do in town. #4 Excellent equipment and tons of opportunity for specialized assignments in as short as 3 to 4 years of patrol experience. #5 Their police academy... phenomenal and you get paid to attend!

Cons

- Police work can be difficult in general and dangerous. But that goes back to hiring the best people and getting the best training. - There is a general feeling in law enforcement currently that there is an anti police atmosphere by a lot of people in society... This really sucks because 99.9% of all the officers out there are doing the right things for the right reason. It can be disheartening unless you focus on the job of keeping people safe and making good decisions one call at a time.

Pros

Pros are 10 hour days, so you have 3 days off a week. Patrol jobs require 2 weekends a month. Detective jobs are generally only 4 days of work between Monday and Friday, so no weekends unless there is a call out due to patrol needing assistance with the investigation. Would consider this a department with relatively low corruption. Pay is okay for officers, ranging approximately from 35,000-65,000; more if you promote. Decent retirement. Health insurance is free for employees; $450 a month for family, regardless of size.

Cons

Cons: workplace is heavily influenced by local and national politics. The lower level officers do not completely trust all the command staff or the city management. This sentiment may not be the same in the higher ranks who are no longer enforcing laws on a daily basis. Crime is rising locally and the risk is increasing for the officers, both due to the risk of death by a criminal, being fired for any violations the command staff perceive you have committed, or as of the year 2020, the risk of being imprisoned for doing your job (this is due to the current political climate).
