How are senior leaders perceived at GitHub?

      GitHub reviews

      Great people, unclear management asks

      Revenue enablement lead
      Current employee
      Seattle, WA
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

wonderful coworkers, amazing benefits, great tech-stack

      Cons

unclear management, quick change and reverting, leadership is not open/helpful, 10 hour work days

      Super toxic

      Anonymous employee
      Current employee
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

The benefits are excellent which is the reason most stay even though the culture is completely toxic.

      Cons

Sadly the culture has become toxic over the past couple years and is only worsening. Upper management has a talk track but are pushing down a very toxic culture that people managers are implementing . It's either get in line or get out. The work environment used to support creativity and strategic thinking, but that's been squashed completely.

      Former employee
      Anoka, NE
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Great benefits, great engineering, great VP level leadership

      Cons

Quotas, market, workload, work home life

Collaborative, Flexible, and Transparent Culture at GitHub

      Software engineer
      Former employee
      San Francisco, CA
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Truly remote-first: Great flexibility to work from anywhere, and people are generally understanding of different work styles/schedules Super collaborative environment—folks are open to pair programming, brainstorming, and async communication Strong culture of feedback; management is receptive and genuinely cares about employee voices Perks from being a Microsoft company (corporate discounts, good benefits, etc.) Food at the office 3x a week is a nice touch if you’re local Transparent leadership—open-door ecosystem (you can literally reach out to anyone, even the CEO, and the org tree makes it easy) CEO and leadership are down to earth and approachable, even sitting with the team when in office

      Cons

Because it’s remote-first, the physical office can sometimes feel empty, and it’s easy to miss that in-person energy/camaraderie Onboarding fully remote can be a little daunting if you’re new to distributed teams Some teams can feel siloed due to timezone differences and async work If you’re someone who thrives on constant in-person interaction, the setup may take some adjustment

      1

      Great product, disfunctional leadership

      Director, software engineering
      Former employee
      Seattle, WA
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Compensation and benefits are decent. Opportunity to contribute to a product that the majority of developers worldwide use.

      Cons

Executive leadership is lacking, and poor hiring decisions have led to an exodus of the leaders who were making a positive impact.

      4

      Bad Upper management

      Senior software engineer
      Current employee
      Toronto, ON
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

      - Salary and benefits are good - Remote

      Cons

      - Upper management reports directly into microsoft in the absence of a CEO - leads to a lot of thrash, long hours, and often burnout in team members

      Used to be awesome

      Senior software engineer
      Former employee
      Boston, MA
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

A while ago it was an aggressively cool place with a lot of vision. Now... it looks good on a resume?

      Cons

The leadership confuses 'chasing growth' for vision. The most innovative products/features are dead or KTLO while leadership mindlessly chases Copilot (which is already being outdone by Cursor and Windsurf). They are also pushing for 'performance culture' which would be fine, except they don't state what that means. They're just making folks anxious and ruining morale for no good reason.

      3

      Exciting fast paced environment

      Data engineer
      Current employee
      Chicago, IL
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Great perks and great ability to contribute to tools that help developers around the world

      Cons

Retention with upper management has continued to be a struggle

      Used to be awesome

      Cons
