I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at ASML (Veldhoven) in Apr 2016
Interview
Submitted my CV to ASML Connection (open application). I was contacted by HR a few days later with suggested open positions deemed suitable for me based on my profile. All were in the Yieldstar Algorithms group.
After expressing my interest, my CV was forwarded to the hiring manager. A week later I was contacted by HR to arrange a time for a Skype interview with the manager. Another two weeks later the Skype interview took place.
During Skype interview the manager asked questions about my background and skills and how I evaluate them. There was also ample opportunity to ask many questions about the position/company. At the end of the call I was told I will probably be invited for an on-site interview. After about two weeks, I did not hear anything and inquired with the manager via e-mail. Shortly afterwards, HR contacted me to arrange an on-site interview. I was also asked to complete an online assessment of my personality and skills (~IQ test).
The on-site interview was about two weeks later. The planning of the travels was a bit chaotic as ASML has separate teams handling every aspect of the recruitment (HR, travel, room/time planning) and some miscommunication took place. Eventually, they arranged my trip (you should not book it yourself) one business day before the interview (taking place on Monday), after writing several e-mails.
On-site interview consisted of three, consecutive, 60 minute 1-on-1 sessions with technical staff. I was briefly greeted by the manager and then met the first interviewer. The interviews consisted of personality questions, a brief discussion of my own research topic and also technical questions to gauge my skills in areas applicable to the group. People were friendly, but one should be ready to back up everything with examples and reasons.
After the last interview session I was taken to the front door; there was no opportunity to get to know the work environment, (other) team members or the canteen etc.
One week after the on-site interview someone from HR called me to tell me they are not interested in hiring me and provided some feedback why.
Overall the interview process is very structured and professional. The administration involved in the interview process is very high, also when compared to other multi-national companies, e.g. Intel.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Give an example of a time where you made a big technical mistake, and how did you handle the situation?
Simple Interview. mostly behavioral questions with few technical questions with the manager. The process was smooth and setup with the recruiter. The interview happened a year ago sop the process might have changed.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at ASML (Veldhoven) in Oct 2024
Interview
HR screening - asked about generic reasons for applying and other application questions.
Interview with team leaders (online) - detailed 1 hr interview on motivation as well as technical questions about physics of overlay. Job responsibilities and motivation.
3 back-to-back interviews (onsite):
First one with two senior engineers (1hr) in the team. I was given a homework question about overlay. Statistical analysis. It was discussed first. Then followed by very detailed technical questions on overlay tests. I was asked to identify the reason for a test protocol that was provided to me during the meeting. Followed by lot more questions on errors and measurements involved in overlay.
Second interview (30mins) was with the team lead on TE questionnaire that I was asked to fill prior. This was conversational about my personality.
Third interview (1hr) was with the team architect and scrum master. Here they asked me about scenarios which can arise at work and how I would deal with conflicts of interests at work. What was the problem that I dealt with during my PhD. More questions on what kind of workplace suits me the best.
The onsite interview was very intense and being under observation in the same room for 2h30m was quite intimidating. I was told there were 6 candidates being interview for 2 vacancies. It was extremely competitive.

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at ASML (Veldhoven) in June 2023
Interview
I applied online through a referral portal. About two weeks after I got a phone call from HR. The phone call was just to confirm that I was interested in the position and to inform me of the upcoming steps. The second interview was a video call with hiring managers about 2 weeks later.
