I received an email from the HR representative asking if I was available for a phone interview. I then interviewed with the hiring manager (infectious disease background) as well as another person in Scientific Affairs (oncology background). Since my experience spans these areas and they were looking for someone who could work in both contexts I thought this made sense at the time.
About 15 days after the second interview, I received an email that an internal candidate had been selected.
The second person I interviewed with also mentioned she had a protocol that might come in handy for me, but although I emailed her thanking her for her time and (very politely) reminding her of it, I never received a reply. I got a general feeling everyone was hurried when dealing with me as well, which was not optimal. The process may have been longer than it would have been had it not happened to coincide with the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) conference.
Everyone was extremely polite and fairly positive throughout the process, but I wish I had gotten a better idea of whether I might be a good fit for this kind of role in the future, or whether the interview process was mostly to provide them with a backup for the internal candidate.
