      Online English Teacher Interview

      19 June 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Mostar
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Acadsoc (Mostar) in June 2017

      Interview

Firstly the recruiter was more than an half hour late, like we have time to waist, and after that it was me and three other girls in the interview, one of them didn't show up at all, smart girl, so there were only three of us in a conversation, and in the beginning the recruiter asked us to turn on our videos, and share screen as well, but she didn't want to turn her video on. After one of the girls didn't know how to share a screen, and she tried to explain to her, not in very good way, because this recruiter English skills are so bad, I honestly don't know how someone who's not familiar with the grammar, pronunciation and writing and reading skills, or anyone who's not near-native or native speaker could work as an recruiter, but that's another thing, so after the third time trying to explain how to share screen and the teacher still didn't know she raised her voice and started yelling, and you could hear on her voice that she was frustrated which is not a good thing, if you work as an teacher or teacher recruiter, you need to have patience and need to stay calm in a lot of different situations, and quickly after that, she asked that teacher to leave our call, even tough she could share her screen and just show her, and after that we proceeded, finally, so next thing after sharing a screen you need to do is speed test, so I passed speed test as well, but the other teacher didn't acquire needed requirements, after that each of us got a one picture to describe in her on personal opinion, and after that we had like a test, 2 grammar related questions, when we finished, the recruiter said she's gonna call us in a few minutes in a separate calls, and tell us did we pass or not. I passed so, I got a demo class, length 5 mins??, and all she told about the class is that lesson subject is ''Family Tree'', and when I asked about materials she said: ''You're on your own now..'' .. so basically I needed to do 5 minutes demo class on a subject which is complex as Family Tree, nor she provided me with an any kind of student information, no students gender, nor age, or level of English proficiency.. so I basically knew nothing, and I prepared some short material, just a definition of an family tree, and something about charts, differences and one picture example of an family tree so the student could know what am I talking about, so she pretended to be entry level student, and even though I simplified every sentence for her in our chat box, and answered all her questions nicely and correct and as simple as I could think of in a moment, of course, because I didn't got any materials for my demo, she basically gave me the subject and called me in 5 mins.. And after 5 minutes she said that my level of English proficiency is to ''high'' to be a kids teacher, even I provided her with an simplified examples of an definitions.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Acadsoc (Chicago, IL) in Apr 2025

      Interview

You have to send proof of internet speed and a photo of a valid ID before they send you a link to have the interview. Once you get the link they jump right in with three questions. 1. What do you think will be the most challenging thing for you working here? 2. Why do you want to teach english online? 3. How would you handle an adult student who doesn't want to study the information provided? They don't leave room for you to ask questions. Then they go into a pretend demo play where the interviewer pretends to be a five year old child and answers you as such. You get a lesson you go over with the child. It all feels very weird because you never see who is conducting the interview. And the baby voice they do is odd to say the least. I received an email stating I passed the interview, however I declined because it was deceitful how they promoted a pay of $16/hr but offered only 13/hr Plus the hours they offer don't work for me at the moment. Here's what they offer: Congratulations for passing the Demo! Salary Rate: 13usd/HOUR Schedule: Weekend(Sat&Sun) 6am-00:00 Weekday(Mon-Fri) 5pm-00:00 Rules: * 4 evening hours at least is required. (evening time:5pm -11pm) * 5 days per week (try not to have the rest on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and Monday). * 25 evening hours is required for a week. * 50 classes-25hours is required in one week. * At least one day on weekends * no more than 10hrs per day and no more than 50hrs per week~ * Salary is once a month thru Paypal (every 1st or 2nd of the month) No student/No pay

Such waste of time guys! Don't apply there, they give you a ton of run around before the interview. They also have no consideration for time zones! Happy I dodged the bullet.

      Interview

The interview itself lasts about 30min (more or less) and I took it with other candidates via Skype/Zoom. The overall process of getting the job and getting to the interview last about 2 weeks, from contacting them to organizing the interview to doing a demo class (which is a trial class where you show them what you can do). The interview is extremely easy, at least in my experience, because you will probably be interviewed along side 2 or more other people. I have had 2 interviews for Acadsoc and both times with 3 other people who could barely pronounce and speak English properly, let alone fluently. This will already give you an advantage (if you really know English and how to teach it). I had two interviews because the first time they told me I was not accepted, and here's why. Basically the most important part of the interview is when they ask you about your technological capabilities. The company does not care how well you can speak English, how much experience you have, or how much you actually know about English. They only care that you can deliver classes with a headset/earphones, good internet, and stable surroundings and background. Now I failed the first time only because I was not sure if I could have wired internet, even though my internet speed was faster than all the other candidates combined. My main tips are that you are cheerful and communicative, and above all, that you tell them you can have wired internet and earphones at least. In the end wired internet is not a necessity and I always used wifi and had 0 issues.
