      Lead Software Developer Interview

      19 Aug 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Portland, OR
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at AltSource (Portland, OR) in Aug 2017

      Interview

Applied to multiple jobs with company over a month period. Finally received an email about Lead Software Developer position and phone call with HR. Talked for about 30 min on my general background, why I wanted to work for them, would I relocate, etc. Seemed to go well and was told next step would be to setup an interview with someone from the dev team. A few days later I get another email from HR (without talking to anyone from dev team) with the below coding assignment. After seeing another review on here, appears they routinely practice age discrimination, but in such a way it can't be litigated in court (in my case, saying I'm not qualified for Full Stack Dev positions, then contacting me on the Lead Position, but intentionally running me off with an unreasonable coding assignment).

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Please code a solution that can perform the following workflows through a console application (accessed via the command line) as well as through a web page. They don’t have to run at the same time, but if you would like to do that, feel free! -Create a new account -Login -Record a deposit -Record a withdrawal -Check balance -See transaction history -Log out Please use a temporary memory store (local cache) instead of creating an actual database. C# is preferred but not required. Use whatever frameworks/libraries you wish, and just make sure they are included or available via NuGet. Please don't spend much time on the UI (unless you love doing that).

We're sorry to hear that you were disappointed by our interview process. We are a company that values diversity and strives to be inclusive and to have our work force reflect those values. Not receiving a response for previous positions applied for does not necessarily connote that we consider the candidate unqualified for the other positions (e.g. Full Stack Dev) as there are multiple steps in the interview process to explore and determine a good fit, and with multiple candidates applying for a single position not all who may be qualified will be selected. One of the methods to determine suitability is a code sample, which all development candidates that move forward from the initial screening call are asked to complete in order to ensure that their skills meet the necessary requirements for the position. Code sample assignments are not intended to run someone off but to ensure that they will be well matched to the needs and expectations of the position and will have the best chance of a successful and fulfilling career at AltSource. We're sorry it wasn't clear that the code sample was the next step in the process before moving on to further interviews. We appreciate the feedback and will make a greater effort to ensure candidates clearly understand next steps when engaging in the AltSource interview process.
