Director of Sales & Customer Service Interview

      22 May 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Philadelphia, PA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Amtrak (Philadelphia, PA) in Apr 2019

      Interview

I applied for the role using my home address that is located over 250 miles from Amtrak's Philadelphia base. I was contacted by a Senior Talent Acquisition Advisor to set up a time in Philadelphia for a panel interview. There was no initial phone screening. I agreed to the on-site panel interview and booked a hotel room in Philadelphia as well as train fare to travel the distance for the interview. While I was in transit to Philadelphia on the afternoon prior to the interview, I was contacted by the Senior Talent Acquisition Advisor to let me know that the interview would now be conducted via Skype. I was a bit shocked, and mentioned that I'd just stepped off of a train at a hub to complete the last leg to Philadelphia, but that I'd be happy to meet via Skype. He simply said "oh, I'm sorry". I asked if it would be using the Skype video app, or would there be a different platform used for our interview. He let me know it would only be an audio meeting, and that all of 3 attendees would be in different locations. The Senior Talent Acquisition Advisor called me again about 4 minutes later and called me by a different name. We sort of laughed and I said it was me again, and he apologized, then we hung up. My phone rang once again from the Senior Talent Acquisition Advisor but he disconnected before I was able to answer. I had the interview and felt that it went well. I emailed thank-you letters to each of the leaders on the panel through (forwarded by the Senior Talent Acquisition Advisor and confirmed sent). 9 days later, I emailed the same Senior Talent Acquisition Advisor for an update on my candidacy. He responded 2 days later with "I do not have solid feedback at this time. You will be notified once we have a decision. Thank you!" I thanked him for his time. I also thought to myself that they'd most likely moved on, and that this would go as many of these reviews show with Amtrak...they have someone earmarked internally and plan to go that route. 2 additional weeks later after no word, I emailed the same Senior Talent Acquisition Advisor asking for an update. Literally 7 minutes later, I received a generic email from a generic account with the standard "Thank you for your interest in Amtrak and the position Dir Sales & Customer Service - Philadelphia. After reviewing your credentials, we have decided to pursue other candidates at this time. We appreciate your interest in Amtrak and encourage you to continue to visit our careers site and apply to other positions." Overall, things seemed disorganized. It was unfortunate that I had to do the follow up on my end without any proactive communication from Amtrak. My home address was clear, but there was little to no empathy at the situation that was created with the last minute change for the interview location. I was also disappointed that there was no personalization in the final response after having gone through the process. We all owe our valuable candidates more than a casual feeling of being brushed off.
