      Sales Development Representative (SDR) Interview

      21 June 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Lisbon, Lisbon District
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Archon Systems (Lisbon, Lisbon District) in Apr 2023

      Interview

There were a few things that bothered me during the interview process. First, they didn't share the time between each stage, and there was no accountability regarding when we were supposed to receive an answer. Second, the screening process for this position was too rigorous and lacked consideration. Third, I had the feeling that being Portuguese would give an advantage to the Lisbon office, even though the company claims to focus on diversity, which wasn't reflected in the Lisbon office. The screening process began with submitting a CV, a cover letter, and answering a few questions. It felt like a bit too much for an entry-level position, but overall it was acceptable. After that, I had a phone call scheduled with the HR person who asked general questions about my CV and experience, as well as two technical questions: 1) what file formats can Excel use, and 2) how to manage files without a Wi-Fi connection. I'm not sure how these questions help differentiate between candidates or qualify their abilities and skills. They are relatively easy to teach and reveal little about a person's abilities. The next stage involved an interview with the Sales Manager, who was also the hiring manager in this case. It was a pleasant one-hour conversation where we went through my CV, and he asked for specific examples from my experience. Following that, there was another interview, but this time with an Account Executive from their Lisbon office as well to the hiring manager. This interview included a technical exercise on their software and a simulated call. The subsequent stage was another interview about my CV and experience, conducted by three individuals: the hiring manager/sales manager, the Account Executive, and one of the founders. This interview felt repetitive to me and included another short call exercise. In the end, when I asked for feedback, they mentioned that they had decided to go with someone who had specific tech sales experience. This outcome didn't come as a surprise. It's a shame that it's just another example of the traditional hiring process where a close circle is preferred. Numerous studies show that skill-based hiring with an emphasis on diversity has huge benefits for the overall performance and culture of an organization.
