      Software Engineer Interview

      14 Feb 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Asana

      Interview

behavioral phone screen, coding challenge, tech phone screen, then onsite. Only got to the coding challenge. Someone else who I wasn't in contact with email wise called me for the behavioral phone screen. I was a little caught off guard and awkward since I usually like to do some research on who I interview with. Nevertheless, he spoke very highly of Asana and talked about where he thought the company was going in the future. He let me know of transparency being key in Asana's interview process as he mentioned they like to give specific feedback to candidates regardless of the outcome. That was something I really appreciated hearing. I was a bit hesitant on doing the coding challenge initially as the types of questions you get asked on these coding challenges almost always have nothing to do with your ability to thrive in the workplace. From now having some experience under my belt, I like to call these tests computer science tests. These aren't indicative of how someone may perform as a software engineer as a typical day looks more like diving into the code base and lots of architecturing from what you know and from having the ability to Google anything. Moreover, I haven't really ever needed to know typical algorithms like Bubble Sort or whatnot to perform on my current job. Because of this, I like to avoid coding challenges, but because the person I talked with let me know that I would receive feedback regardless of the outcome, I decided to do it. Contrary to what the recruiter told me, I received absolutely no feedback whatsoever and was given the standard rejection email. Without any feedback, I'd imagine any candidate feels like they've wasted their time. This is very disappointing on Asana's end as talking about giving candidates feedback is what made me change my mind and do the coding challenge as I thought Asana stood out in their recruiting process. I tried emailing for any feedback, but was ghosted with absolutely no response. I'll say that the guy I talked to over the phone was certainly a convincing recruiter with his experience, but guess Asana is just your typical tech company leaving their candidates in the dark with no human interaction. I wanna say that because I'd written my code up to pylint standards that readability definitely was not an issue. I must've missed some typical college textbook algorithm, that again most definitely has nothing to do with how you'd perform in the workplace, so they must've not liked the algorithm I wrote.

      Question 1

same thing about the rabbit and carrots. I know I've seen this pop up everywhere on glassdoor, but I could only imagine the frustration someone with 5 years of experience would go through from having to do this kind of problem as a coding challenge...

It's important to us and our culture of transparency and trust that we follow through on our word, even if it's uncomfortable. In this instance, we did not do that, and I am very sorry for the frustration this caused you. It is not a good reflection of what we practice, and we will be more diligent in following through when we tell candidates that we are going to share feedback.

I applied online. I interviewed at Asana in May 2026

      Interview

Initial screening went well and I felt genuinely excited about the opportunity. The technical interview itself was different from what the preparation PDF described — less collaborative, minimal engagement from the interviewer's side. I didn't receive any feedback after the session; the interviewer went on sick leave and I waited several weeks before receiving a rejection email. I'm fine with rejection — that's part of the process. What was harder was the uncertainty and the lack of feedback. The prep materials set clear expectations around collaboration and communication, and the actual experience didn't match that.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I interviewed at Asana in Feb 2026

      Interview

Overall, it was a good experience. There was one interviewer who acted standoff-ish and strange. But, for the most part, it was conducted very professionally. What I didn't like was the Systems interview question, which is a very specific modelling problem and unless you've worked on building such a feature, it's unlikely that you'll recognize such a pattern and come up with a decent solution. And for a mid-level position, it's quite surprising. But I guess they gotta justify the high comps somehow. Also, infrastructure knowledge is not tested at all in this interview, which is atypical. The coding interviews were great. Study typical LLD problems. Leetcode is minimal and simple. Focus on understanding patterns and not memorizing solutions. The HM interview was great. He probed in ways typical EMs have never done before, and it gave me a really good impression of the company and his team, despite also not passing this interview, which I take full responsibility for.
