      Product Manager Interview

      17 Oct 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Seattle, WA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Axon (Seattle, WA) in Sept 2017

      Interview

Applied online in June of 2017. Received initial phone/call email in mid-July. (Note: at every step of the process I was constantly being told about how "fast" they move in hiring, but from application date to in-person interview, it was 3 months to the day.) Phone screen was typical PM questions to verify I knew what I was talking about, nothing special there. Eventually I was scheduled for a phone interview with the hiring manager, this went fine, and then I was asked to complete the somewhat-typical product manager homework assignment. In the past I've typically opted-out of interviews that require a homework assignment, as I've heard too many horror stories of unscrupulous companies using them to get free work/ideas out of candidates they don't intend to hire. However, I thought this work was interesting enough that I'd be willing to put up with it. It was a typical problem presentation and then some questions to address about how to build an MVP product to address the problem - later I learned this was an actual product they'd built, and that introduces its whole own set of problems in asking a homework assignment about a product that they've actually built. Anyhow, they liked my response to the homework enough to have me in. Interview schedule was from 9:45-4:30pm, which is a complete day-ruiner and required a day off of work. Even having interviewed at Google and some other "top-tier" companies, this was by far the longest on-site I've had to do. Big negative marks for not confining the interview to 8-12 or 1-5 so that I could actually get a half day of work in. On-site was split across several folks: designer, PM, another designer, another PM, tech lead, and finally the hiring manager. I'm not sure why I couldn't have met with both PMs or both designers in the same hour block. The whole thing felt needlessly long. Nothing atypical about any of the questions I was asked at any point - all the boring "tell me about a time when..." behavioral questions in addition to the normal stuff about background, etc. Last hour with the hiring manager felt combative from the beginning - whereas everyone else was super friendly, the hiring manager very clearly seemed annoyed that he had to devote time to this. It made it nearly impossible to establish any sort of rapport (which had been easily done with everyone else I met). I left with a bad taste in my mouth - after everything else had gone well, the hiring manager experience felt like a big let down. I was contacted about a week later and told they went with someone else, which felt like a pointless lie when I saw the job reposted again a few days later. The recruiter, who I give high marks for being exceptionally friendly and helpful a throughout the entire process, offered to schedule a followup call with me to debrief on why I didn't get an offer. I've sent him two emails to schedule this call and he's ignored both of them. Long story short, what initially felt like a really positive (albeit exceptionally long process), ended on a real sour note between the gruffness of the hiring manager and the recruiter's decision to ignore my emails. I understand it's difficult to give a candidate anything of real value in a debrief such as the proposed one, but why even pretend to be interested in scheduling a debrief if you have no intention of actually doing it? The whole thing felt weird.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Axon in June 2024

      Interview

Overall, took two months from application submission to the first interview with the hiring manager. Process is unclear. Prior to the recruiter screening call, I was asked to send a few written answers to some questions to help set the stage for the call with the recruiter. During the call, it became clear that the recruiter did not read the requested document, later stating that it would be sent to the hiring manager. The hiring manager call was supposed to be about the company values, as per the invite and communication with the recruitment team. Much time was wasted on understanding these values, and preparing good answers for them. The actual interview didn't touch on these at all, instead, the hiring manager asked me to tell them about a product that I had managed that I wasn't a user for. Fair enough, good question, but it isn't what I was told to prepare for. Felt like an ambush. Again, only at the end of the call, after answering all the questions the interviewer had, do I learn that they wanted to hear about the specific things I do to interact with customers and understand their needs. They never directly asked about that. I need to improve my mind-reading skills. Oh, and the kicker? No feedback after the interview. Just a generic email. I get not sending feedback after an application or a screener, but after an interview with the hiring manager?

      Interview

I had a recruiter call, followed by interviews with 2 Axon team members. They gave me me a case study, and after I put in my own time to complete it, they hired someone else without reviewing my work or allowing me to present. Be cautious with this company during the interview process.

      Product Manager Interview

      18 Apr 2022
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Axon in Mar 2022

      Interview

The interview process was relatively straight forward, with a "loop" of interviews with various parties within the scope of expertise / job description. The coordinators did an EXCELLENT job guiding the whole process from start to finish. Everyone involved in my interview loop was incredibly welcoming, and were truly interested in encouraging and answering any questions I had about the job, the company, why they joined, the mission, and everything in between. I was challenged to answer specific questions, some related to my technical challenge, others of a more general nature, and was enabled to give my actual opinion instead of what I thought they wanted to hear, which was incredibly refreshing. I had 5 interviews total for my loop, 3 of those being more general interviews looking at personality, culture fit, team fit with some general knowledge included. 2 of them were much more technical, one going over my challenge and another being probed on "way of thinking" about several different types of problems. Throughout the whole process things were scheduled and communicated very quickly and clearly, and I never felt like it was a "black hole" of whether or not there was any progression. I felt like I was given information as soon as it was available.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      - "explain your technical challenge, and defend the path you decided on" - "if you worked at amazon, and there was a sudden 30% drop in sales over a 3 day span for the US, explain your steps to identify the problem"
