What they really want at that stage is a true interest in the field and good reason why you want to go into equity research. You also need to show a clear interest in investing, including stock pitch ideas (do not pick some stock everyone knows like Apple).

1st round HR screen, 2nd round fit screen, 3rd round technical test, 4th round analyst decision. Technical test can be verbal or Excel-based. At the minimum need to be very comfortable with 3 statement models.
