I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Backbase (Amsterdam) in Apr 2020
Interview
The HR interview was ok, a common discussion about your experience in development and management.
The home assignment test should be returned in a few days.
You will have to create an app that consumes an API that supports all kinds of devices in both orientations, in the same time they are asking for a lot of functionalities which in the end are not even checked, no technical constraints, and poorly described.
Also, there are some paragraphs in the assignment telling you to "focus" on the UI but to create it as you please.
You are also required to create web content and display it in a web view (as an iOS dev*).
At the end after all the efforts you've put into delivering a proper technical solution in a few days, trying to show all your best technical skills, you will receive a message mocking you that your UI looks ugly and like 10 years ago (exactly like that) + why you didn't use simple architecture like MVC (without having this as a technical constraint in the first place).
This was entire feedback after all the hours I've put into that assignment, no technical questions, no suggestions, or what can be improved. just a mocking email about how ugly the design is.
To me, this looks like the design team did the assignment check and no technical people are left in the company to do the check.
This company is on my ban list from now.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Implement a weather App consuming an API, with more than 12 functionalities, which must be pixel perfect on all kinds of iPhones and iPads in both orientations.
In the end, only the UI counts, so don't waste your time trying to come with optimized or nice complex solutions.
