The goal of the phone interview is to determine whether there is a mutual fit at a high level, and sometimes it is difficult to read the other person without the benefit of visual confirmation of the candidate's confusion. Pauses on the recruiter’s end may be to take notes or to gather thoughts, and it’s unfortunate they were interpreted otherwise. We definitely look to match similarities between what a candidate has done before, taking into consideration skill sets and real time needs, and what we expect them do to here for success. However, determining cultural fit – whether a candidate can be additive to our company overall is really our first priority.
