I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Belk (Charlotte, NC)
Interview
The process itself was fast and professional. Phone interview a couple of in person sessions where I met with other directors, VPs and C-Levels. HR was a pleasure to deal with, very professional, good communication. While clearly the IT staff has been upgraded there are still some relics from the old days who are completely out of touch. Based on their questions and attitudes they aren’t current with today’s strategies and technologies, and don’t like the changes in this department. Sadly I got very different views of the job from the more recent hires than the long term employees which says this isn’t one team. Also Belk clearly hires for ‘skills’ in a specific role rather than hiring for character, I doubt they are capable of real career development even with their executives. At the end of two days of interviewing, It was very clear to me this wasn't the right company for me.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
None, they asked the same boring questions, what are your strong points, what are you weak points. Then a lot of questions on what technologies and methodologies I have experience in but none on successful or failed projects. Not one person asked me where I wanted to be in 5-10 years in my career which I think is an important question but almost everyone asked me why I wanted to work there, (and not in a good way). One executive just asked who we might know in common so he could ask them about me???
