Informational Interview - No Current Openings Interview

      15 Jan 2010
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Charleston, SC
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Benefitfocus (Charleston, SC) in Dec 2009

      Interview

A current employee graduated from the same grad program as I did. He passed my resume to a recruiter. My employer at that time explained that company recruiters often have to interview a certain number of candidates to make a quota. It was Christmas and the company was not currently hiring, so I thought this was just an opportunity for the recruiter to have something to do that day at work. She was kind to give me feedback on my resume. She said she rarely read the goal/summary section. She paid the most attention to the job I spent 4 years at (and had the most bullet points) rather than my most recent job, which reflected my current career interest. In summary, don't bother with a summary/goal section of your resume. The job that reflects your career direction, put that at the top and flesh out your responsibilities. The jobs that don't reflect your career interest, remove or limit bullet points. Use your college peers to get your resume in front of a recruiter. That has worked twice for me.
