I recently interviewed with Birmingham City University and unfortunately found the experience to be one of the most disappointing I’ve had. The interview started late with no apology or acknowledgement, which set the tone for what followed. The panel came across as disengaged and abrupt, providing little warmth, personality, or inspiration throughout the discussion.
As a senior-level candidate, I expected a thoughtful conversation about the role, the strategy, and how I could contribute. Instead, the process felt flat and transactional, with limited insight offered and minimal effort to create a positive candidate experience.
Overall, this interaction didn’t reflect well on the organisation’s culture or leadership approach. I left feeling undervalued and genuinely surprised that such a lacklustre experience could be considered acceptable in a competitive market for talent.
