I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Blue Origin (Black Diamond, WA) in Jan 2019
Interview
Phone call with recruiter. On-site interview with manager. Overall good experience. Blue is owned by Jeff Bezos, so I should have known amazons leadership principles would have come up. They were looking for qualifications that I didn’t have experience with, so I didn’t make it to the next round.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Tell me about a time when you had to sacrifice a short term win for the long term goal?
Phone Interview was going fine and then they asked me what kind of animal would I be if I had a choice. Why do they ask what animal I would like to be?

If you want an edge on your competition for the position you’re interviewing for, do yourself a favor and head to your nearest grocery store and buy their entire supply of blue kool aid. Mix it all into one pitcher the night before and chug it about 15 minutes into your interview loop. This establishes dominance and will illustrate your dedication to the “mission”. If you get the job I would recommend going back to stock up.
I will echo the sentiment of other posts here: HR is an absolute trainwreck. Communication was an issue throughout every step of the process. I was even given the wrong time to show up for my interview. “Passion for the mission” appears to be much more important than technical ability. If HR ever does eventually contact you with instructions for your interview loop, take their words with a large grain of salt. I was told to prepare a technical presentation and so that’s just what I did. However, I was interrupted mid-engineering presentation for being too technical. Go figure.
Beyond the presentation, the 1v1s were not an overall positive experience. One was eating during our 1v1 over zoom and another I can only hope to assume gave a poor attempt at a bar-raiser/stress interview, but their questions ended up negative and aggressive. Overall, bad vibes from several of the interviewers. By the end, I wasn’t even sure I would have accepted an offer, had it been extended.
To anyone from Blue Origin reading this: I know that you are a space company, but I would recommend coming back down to Earth for your recruiting. For now, we all still live here. Also, this is more of a personal preference, but the writing portion of the process is an odd requirement. I’m an engineer not an essayist. Do like any other normal company and just ask me about my interests in space during the interview. Oh yeah, and fix your HR department lol.
