      Dishwasher Interview

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Brasa (Saint Paul, MN) in Aug 2014

      Interview

It was confusing and weird, a miscommunication led to me not getting hired and I felt like a piece of meat just discarded. I filled out the application and was called a few days later, they offered me slightly higher than their starting wage due to my previous experience dishwashing. The guy on the phone also offered a "trial shift", which was paid, to see if I would like the environment and job. I thought I was getting the special treatment! Everything was going great, then I get there and he has my shift scheduled on a slow day with another dishwasher to train me in. But this other dishwasher only speaks Spanish, so I try to use what little I know to communicate. Unfortunately even after successful communication he takes over everything, and I have nothing to do. I felt like, okay oh well- I got a good enough impression that I didn't need the full shift and didn't need to waste their money if there wasn't enough work (which is rare for a dishwasher!!). So I told this to my manager and he took it weirdly, I was being a supportive team player that said- don't worry about it, let's just get me on the schedule and we'll talk about it when you have time to organize it all. I thought it was a bit poorly scheduled and disorganized but I was being supportive and understanding. He seemed unhappy but was too busy and said he would call me later. The next day he calls me and says they found a replacement dishwasher who did well in the trial and gave the job to him. I asked if I had been fired and was told I hadn't been hired yet, throughout a brief conversation I came to the understanding that the trial shift was for the company to see if I could do a good job, not for me. The conversation was really abrupt and cut off quickly. I felt lied to, cheated, and completely tossed to the side even though is manager knew I just worked 4 days of dishwashing before this shift and was still energized enough to work hard and be a team player, that I connected with employees and they helped with Spanish translation and it went really well. This miscommunication was a blatant error, I went from feeling like I had the special treatment to realizing I was easily discarded and quickly replaceable.
