      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at ByteDance

      Interview

I was not actively job searching and a recruiter reached out to me regarding a benefits position which is my area of expertise, but in the operational aspect of benefits. I pressed with the recruiter that I don't have experience with Benefits Design and my experience is Benefits Operations. The recruiter made it seem like that was perfect, and she said it would only be an informational interview with the hiring manager where I can gather more information, not formal at all. I thought "Great". Well here comes the interview and it couldn't have been more formal. The hiring manager asked me questions like I was actively job searching and explained the role more clearly that it was more of the design part of Benefits. I told him that I clarified with the recruiter that my experience is not on the design aspect but on the operational side. There was total miscommunication and misunderstanding on the recruiter side. Obviously this was role not well explained by the recruiter and I wasted an hour of my time. And remember, I came into this thinking it was just informational rather than formal. The recruiters are incredibly young and inexperienced and need to do a better at understanding the job requirements rather than just reaching out to people to meet their numbers.
