I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Caltrans in July 2012
Interview
You submit an application to the filed office then selected for an interview. The interview consisted of a panel of 3 department heads. You are shown the interview questions before the interview. The first step in the process is taking the State administered test for the position. Once on the list, you become "reachable". This requirement is valid for any agency in the State of California who is hiring for this position.
The Caltrans interview process was straightforward and comfortable. I interviewed with a two-person panel, and most questions followed the STAR format, making it easy to organize clear, relevant examples. About 30 mins long.
Remote online video interview with four people. Showed questions ahead of time and gave me a few minutes to look them over in silence before proceeding. Very structured and as expected.
