      Devops Engineer Interview

      7 Sept 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Camunda

      Interview

To start, before submitting I've researched on the company and it was the first time I really wanted to land somewhere due to company's culture. I checked their GitHub as well to get acquainted with their open-source projects and installed locally their available apps. I even found an inconsistency in it and mentioned it to the recruiter. On paper the interview process was well developed and explained. I've got a separate google doc describing all the stages and timelines. Then we agreed on a coding challenge - and I again got a doc that was well prepared, everything was well explained and there was a timeline - with mentioning when I will get a feedback, 2 days max. Fine, so I started doing that. Since I was coming from an admin position to DevOps and I wanted badly to switch - I did my best and finished the task successfully (the program I written and packed and deployed to k8s worked as expected) and sent it on 2nd day (out of max. 5). Then 2 days passed, I got no feedback. On 4th day early in the morning I reminded the HR about it, she responded on 5th day and told me the position has been put on hold and so they stop the process. I got no feedback for my test task that I spent time on. Probably she wanted to save the situation, and mentioned that there is another position that I can have a look on. I answered that we can discuss - and then radio silence. Two weeks later she wrote me an email again proposing to have a call. I've had already sour experience, but gave it a last chance and agreed. Radio silence again. So the real recruiting experience was a lot different from what they were claiming from the very beginning. I would at least expect a good contact and some feedback on my task - if you give tasks to candidates, it obliges yourselves as well to do something. The salary mentioned at the very beginning was not bad, but it was not something special as well, my main motivation was to find a devops position in a good remote-first company. I was getting a very similar money being just a senior admin at that moment, and now finally switched to where I wanted to.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Test task was to write a Prometheus exporter app in Python to get some metrics in a certain format, pack it into Docker, write simple k8s configuration and then deploy it .
