Phone screen, then on-site interview. My airfare was not reimbursed. The group members I met with were excellent. The faculty members whom I would work under were close-minded from the instant I arrived in the morning. I had all of the experience necessary, and came from a top lab with the resume to prove it, but the faculty were extraordinarily difficult to impress. I was repeatedly told that because I didn't have explicit experience with R, I would be difficult to train. I was also told that everyone already knows about my work and that it is not new. The number of times they mentioned how stressful grant writing was was very high - they seemed to feed off of that and find self-worth with how successful they were.
In reality, I think the people I interviewed with were bad eggs in a sea of probably great people, but my experience here was the worst I've ever had. Truthfully, I was not mad at the end. Rather than be upset about the $350 flight that was not reimbursed, I took solace in the fact that their specific scientific community is tiny, and I will absolutely cross paths with them again - likely to review one of their papers. I had 4 offers at other places so I was happy to leave City of Hope without an offer.
