      Senior Java Developer Interview

      14 Mar 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Redhill, South East England, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at CitySprint (UK) (Redhill, South East England, England) in Mar 2016

      Interview

After an initial 30 minutes phone call I went for a face-to-face interview in Redhill for which I had to prepare a coding test. I noticed some negative signs from the initial call when they mentioned they are building an application having the 'microservices layer in PHP'. When I asked why they said that PHP developers are cheaper(!) after which they corrected themselves and said that development is faster in PHP. The face-to-face interview lasted 1h in which I probably spoke 10-15 minutes. The technical interviewer was rambling on different unrelated topics for minutes. I was never asked to show my coding test and there was no mention of it. I was never asked a technical question. Practically they were searching for someone to solve their 'machine learning' problem, which I think they knew nothing about and at the same time respect their 'architecture'. My feeling was that they have no clue on how to solve the problem they were facing and were looking for someone to do it for them. They should have mentioned that in the initial call to save me a trip to Redhill. I don't envision the project being a success with the interviewers leading it. To me they looked out of their depth.
