I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Coastal Angler Magazine (Jacksonville, FL) in Apr 2019
Interview
Phone screen with franchisee followed by a one on one interview. He showed the various regional magazines and how they place the advertising - national, regional and local ad placement followed by an explanation of the distribution, number of copies and locations. I had to bring up compensation and he said you are an independent contractor and are paid 25% on new business (the highest in the industry) but he certainly hasn't worked as a IC before because I've been paid 30-40% on new business. I've also had accounts transferred over to me to at least give you some working commission as a start. Not at this company - no accounts, no draw - nothing. So - you need a spouse working or be someone right out of college living at home with no expenses in order to subsidize the amount of time you will need to make this a full time job. Plus - do your homework. This magazine has been in the local area for 20+ years but only has 20 local advertisers to show and a few ones that do regional. And this is with various other reps in the territory also trying to sell. The numbers just don't add up for this position and it is no wonder why turnover is so high.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
None - apparently he thought I was a great fit for the position. And why wouldn't I be? The franchisee doesn't have any risk paying 25% on all new business and not providing any compensation. I'm sure part of that 75% goes to printing but I'm sensing that 50% of all your sales efforts goes to the Franchisee.
