      Software Engineer Interview

      13 Mar 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Collage.com in Feb 2019

      Interview

I interviewed with a person at the company 1:1. He had me ask questions about Collage but didn't really ask me questions. We then jumped into a 30 min coding session. This part of the interview process was collaborative and I enjoyed the task we accomplished. About a week later I received a take home assignment that was supposed to take 3-4 hours. I thought the questions that I was asked to solve were interesting, but the time frame of 3-4 hours wasn't very accurate for what needed to be done. The code they gave was really messy, and they said to make changes I would suggest in a peer review and had about 3 stories worth of new functionality to implement. The thing that really was frustrating was how little communication occurred in the second part. I received the assignment and had a lot of questions about their expectations (as any engineer would if a PO gave them 3 stories to implement). I sent several emails but didn't hear back until the next day (after I had submitted) and didn't have any other line of communication. I was then sent a follow up email with questions about my implementation. I answered them to the best of my understanding of what they were looking for, but for being a remote company I don't think email only communication is good at all. They said they conduct their stand ups over email so that was a big red flag for me going in and this stage just confirmed my fear of how communicating would go. Another concern I have is the time estimation process - the team lead and PO estimate all stories. Based on the size of the take home assignment and the estimation that the first task would take 10-20 min (it didn't) and the second task 3-4 hours (more like 6 with all of the refactoring) I was left with the impression that this would not be a good place to work. All in all I enjoyed the first interview and the problems were interesting and I learned some things as I went, but I thought the second part would have gone much better if I had been able to talk with my interviewer about what the expectations were of the take home assignment.

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to submit your feedback. You have raised some important points. We are currently looking at how we can improve our lines of communication with candidates in the interview process and have already made operational changes in order to do so. We are a very customer-focussed company and that includes our candidates so we are committed to learning how we can create a better experience and that starts with feedback like this! We will continue to incorporate your ideas into our ongoing improvement efforts. Thank you! -Emma, Head of Talent Acquisition

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Collage.com in Aug 2020

      Interview

I had a phone interview with a recruiter, then a coding test, an interview with an engineer, and completed a technical challenge. I enjoyed my meetings even though i was ultimately rejected. Everyone was really nice. I thought the longer technical challenge was hard but nothing too surprising even though i didnt pass it and i got feedback at the end which was helpful to understand the decision.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

I was asked a lot of cultural questions and questions about engineering processes and projects.

      Software Engineer Interview

      15 July 2020
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Collage.com in Apr 2020

      Interview

Initial 30 min phone screening, then an hour long Javascript technical assessment on codingame.com (mostly about using Promises). After that I had an hour long video interview with an engineering manager. We discussed a fair amount of technical things related to past jobs, but also spent a lot of time discussing my experience with agile development, being on a remote team, and what I thought my past successes and failures were as a developer. Then I was given a longer take home assignment, which involved adding new functionality to a preexisting component (and making any changes/improvements that would be reasonable to point out in a code review). The new functionality required some refactoring of the existing code, but a total refactor was discouraged ... and overall I felt this was a good test of what actual development often entails. The assignment definitely required some clarification, but questions were encouraged, and the Collage CTO was quick to respond. After that I had two hour long interviews with the founders (Kevin and Joey). Kevin's questions tended to be more technical, but also had a large behavioral focus (ability to work on a team, communicate, ask questions when confused, learn from mistakes). Joey's questions also had a large behavioral focus, and seemed directed at figuring whether or not I would be happy/successful working remotely, and a good fit at Collage generally. Overall I enjoyed the experience, and was happy to accept an offer from them. I found video interviews to be more unnerving than in person ones (just because it's harder to read people via video, and sometimes audio/video lag makes conversation feel less natural). I would say that the interview process felt quite rigorous (like Collage was looking for something very specific at each stage, and if they did not find it you would not make it to the next step) ... I can see that rigorousness rubbing people the wrong way, but it had the opposite effect for me, since it made me more confident that they were being selective about their hires, and that if I did get an offer, that it would be a good fit for everyone involved. Overall the process took a little over a month. I was told that the process could be accelerated if I needed them to make a decision faster, but I never took advantage of that offer.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

What are some ways you thought the engineering process at past jobs could be improved? Did you suggest them or implement them? If you did not, why not? Give an example of a time when you gave and/or received criticism at a past engineering job successfully.
