I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Crosscountry Trains (Birmingham, England) in May 2026
Interview
The interview process was very new to me as it was my first ever assessment day. The process was actually really simple and the assessors were actually very supportive.
The assessment was two exams and a group exercise which you have to pass to progress to an interview, I passed and had an interview but sadly wasn’t offered the role
I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Crosscountry Trains (Derby, England) in July 2025
Interview
A group discussion based on short moral statements, one of which you each select and then talk about. Subjects are as varied as the reintroduction of the death penalty to parenting styles.
Three short exams (you are sent practise papers prior to the interview) regarding your ability to process and apply written information quickly and accurately.
Short wait whilst your performance is discussed to see whether you progress to interview. We weren't kept hanging around too long, and refreshments were offered.
Interview with line manager and observer/note taker. Some questions are the general customer service ones, a few are more industry specific and are not so easy to answer if you are coming into the industry from another sector.
Everyone seemed very nice, and the atmosphere was quite informal but the actual interviewer was rather patronising and I'm not sure that brought out the best in me! Feedback was offered, and I have since been in touch with the manager on the day and none has been forthcoming.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
1) Give an example of excellent customer service
2) What action would you take as train manager if your train was terminated twenty miles from its intended destination.
3 rounds in interview. Numeracy and English test, group discussion, one to one if successful from previous 2. Numeracy is based off of looking at prices on a menu with different discounts at certain times of the day and the questions relate to that so you have to determine what the correct price is before doing the sum.
