      Senior C++ Robotics Engineer Interview

      2 July 2025

      Application

      I applied online. I interviewed at Cyngn in July 2025

      Interview

      I recently interviewed for the Senior C++ Robotics Engineer role. Despite preparing extensively and having years of experience in autonomy, path planning, and ROS-based development, the interviewer focused solely on control theory questions and ended the interview abruptly when I didn’t respond immediately. The question itself was extremely basic (involving trigonometry), and while I interpreted it more broadly at first, the lack of communication or interest in my thought process was disheartening. The interviewer did not say goodbye, provide feedback, or even acknowledge my background. It felt dismissive and discourteous. For a company seeking engineers for planning and behavior modules—not a pure control role—it’s surprising that the interview focused exclusively on control-related questions without context. I believe interview processes should aim to assess holistic skills, critical thinking, and relevance to the job—not just gatekeeping with a single math question. I hope Cyngn reconsiders how it evaluates candidates, especially experienced ones.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      If a bicycle model is moving at velocity V and heading angle θ, what is its velocity in the X and Y directions? This was the only technical question asked. While the math behind it is simple (V * cos(θ), V * sin(θ)), the interviewer showed no interest in hearing my thought process or discussing my actual experience with vehicle models, ROS, or planning systems. No questions were asked about my resume or relevant project experience.
