      Product Manager Interview

      14 May 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Datadog in May 2025

      Interview

The process included an initial HM screen, followed by four structured rounds: an engineering collab interview, a analytical deep dive, a technical round, and a case study. Most rounds were thoughtful and aligned with the role, but final decisions appeared to hinge disproportionately on one round, making the outcome feel less balanced. Pros: 1. Datadog is doing impressive work in observability and cloud-native infrastructure. 2. The interview process was structured well on paper, with clear stages and relevant case studies. 3. Conversations with most of the team, especially technical and analytical rounds, were engaging and thoughtful. Cons: 1. The interview experience felt overly reliant on the opinion of one interviewer, despite strong performance across other rounds. 2. Post-interview feedback was vague and contradictory — I was told there was nothing I needed to improve, but still didn’t get an offer. 3. One interviewer seemed disengaged and dismissive, which made the process feel more like gatekeeping than evaluation. 4. The recruiter’s communication style was casual to the point of unprofessionalism in parts, which made the outcome feel even more frustrating. After putting in 2 weeks of hard work, I had a 2 minute phone call from the recruiter to tell me they aren't moving forward. There was no actual feedback. Advice to Management: 1. Refine the debrief process to weigh candidate performance holistically across all rounds. 2. Encourage interviewers to give actionable, transparent feedback — not platitudes. 3. Candidates invest time and energy — they deserve the same from your side.

Lastly there is a panel round with 2 behavior and 2 technical interviews with product and engineering leaders.

      Difficult interview

      Application

      I interviewed at Datadog

      Interview

Straight forward process, last round consists of analytical, engineering collaboration, technical, and case study. I felt that the technical interview was easier than what I’d have thought. Case study interview feels a bit subjective since it had something to do with one of Datadog’s products. Recruitment process as a whole was transparent and I love that they give you feedback at the end.

Recruiter was friendly and transparent in explaining the interview process. Asked questions on whether I had experience for things listed in job description and requirements. Didn’t get to hiring manager round but overall great experience, recruiter was open to keeping in touch in case there was an opening with a better fit.
