      Engineering Manager Interview

      10 July 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at DeepL

      Interview

I recently had the misfortune of going through an interview process with DeepL, and I must say it was quite a bad experience. From start to finish, the process was frustrating. First, they took ages to respond to my initial application. After finally getting an invitation for an interview, I was hopeful things would improve, but unfortunately, they did not. Communication was virtually non-existent; even after follow-up emails, I received no replies. This lack of respect for my time was incredibly disappointing and showed a total disregard for potential candidates. Overall, the feeling I got was that they really don't care about the time and effort you put into applying to their company. I would advise others to be cautious and prepared for a potentially frustrating experience if you choose to apply here.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at DeepL in Sept 2025

      Interview

The interview process was outlined to me as a five-stage process (including a screening call, systems design, culture, and managerial interviews). Late in the process, I received a call that said they were considering adding an additional take-home task. I explained that given the final stage of the process I was already at, I wasn't prepared to take on an extra task, and they were happy to go ahead as planned. Following the final interview, I was told that feedback was positive and that we'd catch up the following week. After this final stage, I received no proactive communication for an extended period. I had to follow up multiple times to get an answer to previous messages, and several questions were not acknowledged or answered. I eventually received a message to let me know they were catching up with the hiring lead that day. I never heard an update, despite my following up. Eventually, after several weeks of silence/unanswered questions, I withdrew from the process. The work the team at DeepL is doing is truly fascinating, and I sincerely liked each person I met through the process. Each of them seemed like smart, engaged individuals who I would have been very glad to work with. My reasons for withdrawing were entirely due to the poor candidate experience and communication. The additional round suggested late in the process made the hiring journey feel inconsistent and poorly managed, and the lack of response and transparent communication was frustrating given the time I (and others) had invested. Even a quick “we’re still deciding” message makes a difference, but despite follow up messages I was kept in the dark on where I stood after the interviews had been completed.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at DeepL (London, England)

      Interview

The application form provided on the DeepL site is buggy and does not submit your details to the company. I filled it out correctly 3 times and checked with the company but they hadn't received my details or CV. There is no general contact for recruitment or HR on their site - you have to contact individuals via LinkedIn, which is cumbersome and weird. You have to guess which person you should contact directly and hope they reply. I was told to contact a specific person via LinkedIn regarding my application. You need to have LinkedIn Premium to send a message to them directly, as there is no way to connect to them - which is just crazy. I messaged them - but 10 days later I haven't got a response. I don't expect to. They are inviting people to apply for their open roles, but make it extremely hard to do so. If the first step of the recruitment process is this painful and difficult, then I hate to think how bad the rest of it must be.
