The interview process for this role was consistent with the structure that other reviewers have outlined. There was an initial phone screen, a take home test, a second phone call where I discussed the take home test with a T&S team member, and a final round, a lengthy "on-site" which is currently virtual on Discord. The final round interviews had a strong emphasis on company values and other soft skills. It's clear that Discord puts a ton of effort into ensuring that people are not only suited for the role but also a genuinely good fit for the rest of company.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
I was asked how I would prioritize responding to a few different types of reported harm (harassment, distributing game cheats, etc.), which included factors like how many people were in a reported community or involved in a particular activity.
I applied online. I interviewed at Discord (Raleigh, NC) in Mar 2021
Interview
The interview process consists of an initial phone call screening with a recruiter and a take-home test. If you pass the take-home test, you speak with a member of the Trust & Safety team.
The process is a bit flawed and does not necessarily reflect best practices. You are not provided with enough resources to confidently answer the take-home test that reflects their internal policies (which are not shared with you). I was told by the recruiter that I was the only person that they had interviewed with formal trust & safety experience, only to be told they would not be moving forward with my candidacy. As someone with years of T&S experience, this came as a shock.
My recommendation is that, if you have worked in T&S, Discord may not be the place you want to invest time and energy. It is clear from the interview process that they do not necessarily care about T&S experience and do not value it as a part of their hiring process.
First a 15 phone interview with HR about your background then a take-home test then a follow-up interview for an hour about that test. Then a remote on-site interview. Communication took very long with oftentimes more than a week between the end of an interview and communication on their part.
