Depends mainly on the lab, in mine you give an oral presentation on a chosen project of yours and then people ask you questions. Your technical ability, as well as your communication skills are put to test. Then, you meet with HR for an informal style interview

Interview
Online interview with the group leader to learn more about the project and present my Master's thesis work. After a few days, I was invited for an on site interview: I had the opportunity to visit the lab, give a presentation to the Head of Laboratory and some team members, and get to know my future colleagues. After the presentation on my research work I had a great discussion on that with the team, and I was asked some general questions mainly meant to assess my motivation for research.
