I had a couple of Skype interviews with the team I was interviewing for. My Japanese was tested a little. The interviewing process might have changed as it was a little informal at the time I applied.

Basically they want to know you can handle going to another country and not go crazy due to culture shock as one of the important parts of the interview if you are coming from somewhere that isn't Japan.
