      Chemist Interview

      20 May 2017
      Anonymous employee
      Rocklin, CA
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at ExcelChem (Rocklin, CA) in Apr 2017

      Interview

The hiring process was surely a sign to say "NOOOOOOOOO!!!!" I was offered an interview for a "Chemist" position. The female owner conducted the interview. During which time she complained about not appreciating her son's idea to take a couple year's off from his collegiate endeavors. She expressed how this was a decision she disagreed with. She showed me invoicing and data examples which she was/is unable to analyze; these were stacked throughout her dingy office. What does this have to do with being a chemist right? Wait, there's more. I was then offered the position of the Lab Supervisor. How? I don't know either. But, I went along with it. Then she goes on to mention how no one in the facility had attained my level of education. Seeing the signs yet? There's still more. She offered a walk-thru of the premises, I obliged of course. The lab was unkempt, chemicals randomly out, chemicals were in glassware without labels and unattended, chemists conducting testing without proper protective equipment, you know like lab coats and safety goggles, just standard lab equipment. I left under the pretense that I'd hear from the job on Monday, as my interview was conducted on a Friday. I was called repeatedly by the tactless "HR" personnel and the hot-headed female owner. They wanted me to make a 30 minute drive back to the office to interview with the male owner. Of course I didn't go. I then received a text message from the female owner. She wanted me to start on Monday. Literally two seconds later an email is received, "Job Offer"; I was offered a totally different position, the third and final position as Project Manager. Wow right? Yes, WOW! I took the position, knowing it'd be VERY temporary. I accepted the position via email late Friday evening. I received several erratic phone calls from the "HR" personnel on Monday morning. During my interview I made it known that I was employed. I guess that wasn't important enough to respect. I returned the call, to an erratic, tactless, HR personnel yelling that she'd called and emailed me.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

No science oriented questions. Nothing relevant to my science background. It was more of a counseling session. The female owner put on what I learned to be her interview face, and he soft,, "pleasant" voice. During said interview she let me know that she was aware that she had "communication problems." SHE DOES!!! But, it's far deeper than communication issues, she needs a life coach. She's rude, emotional, and irate.

      Interview

Scheduled an interview over the phone within 24 hours. Interviewed with owner who brought his dog into the interview. He asked many HR questions (and not a single science or technical question) before telling me I'd be a better fit for his Office Administrator job. Keep in mind, I came in with a 4 year BS degree and over 3 years relevant laboratory experience, and I was called in for a "Chemist position" with 6 months of lab experience. He said I'd be a great fit as Office Assistant and that he'd be interested in starting me "within days" however, due to my having "zero experience" it would be expensive to train me. I accidentally scoffed at the pay and that was the end of the discussion. He offered me a tour of the lab, in which case I noticed not a single woman in the laboratory. During the tour, he casually asked if I knew what an anion was.
