      Sales Associate Interview

      14 Aug 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Long Beach, CA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied in-person. I interviewed at Express (Long Beach, CA) in Aug 2018

      Interview

The interview was pretty easy and went relatively well. I was part of a group interview, and the manager asked us simple questions like, "Tell me about yourself," "Where did you work before?" "What was your favorite experience about your last job?" However, after hearing about what kind of job this would be, I decided not to come back. She told us that the job guarantees zero hours (so why hire anyone then?). She said that hours are inconsistent, week by week, even day by day—so if you received a certain amount of hours one week, we shouldn't expect to get the same amount next week. (I looked up company reviews afterwards, and saw that many employees had reported only getting a few hours each week, even per month!) Employees who sold more clothing were given more hours than other employees, which seemed a lot like favoritism to me. The manager made a point of saying that she wanted employees to follow customers around and ask them if they wanted to buy more clothing (i.e., "Oh, you want a pair of pants? How about this jacket to go with it, then? And these shoes? And this shirt would look great with it, too!"). Employees are expected to reach certain goals by two hours, and if they don't, they were guaranteed less work hours (??). To add to that, the company has a strange dress code: if you were jeans or pants to work, you are required to wear Express branded jeans. You are not allowed to wear other brands. Before I walked into the interview, I took a good look around the store and couldn't help noticing how expensive their clothing was. Required to buy a certain brand of expensive pants when we weren't even guaranteed hours to make up for the purchase—no thank you. Needless to say, I decided not to return.
