An OUTSIDE RECRUITER reached out to me on LinkedIn about the open role at Fashion Nova. At first she seemed to be impressed with my experience and the role sounded like it could have been a good fit. Then, upon sharing where in LA I was living, she proceeded to tell me that I wouldn't be able to "deal with" the commute, that I should consider moving, and the company has been "burned" before by people who didn't like the commute. It felt like we argued for at least 10 minutes. Mind you, I've worked for other LA companies with much worse commutes.
From my experience, when employees say they are leaving a job because the commute is long, there's always some other reason tied to it: low pay, poor culture, unclear growth.
I don't think it's a recruiter's place to make assumptions about a candidates commute preferences... at least not to their face. If you really think a candidate won't accept the commute, then that's up to the recruiter on their end to not pass along a candidate's resume. But don't waste half of a whole interview debating a candidate on whether or not you think they're being truthful or not.
