      Portfolio Manager Interview

      8 Oct 2025
      Anonymous employee
      Troy, MI
      Accepted offer
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Flagstar Bank in Feb 2024

      Interview

First, I was emailed by the HR representative who set up a phone screening basically talking about why i'm interested in the position, salary expectations and so forth. Then I was called into the office for an interview with the hiring manager. The hiring manager didn't really ask me any questions about my experience or any typical behavioural questions. It almost sounded like he wasn't prepared for the interview and didn't know what to talk about. I was told a decision would be made within the week. A week went by and I didn't hear anything. I reached out a few times to both the hiring manager and the HR rep but didn't get any respond back. A couples month later, I was sent one of those automated emails saying the position was filled. It's okay to not get a position but being unresponsive, setting unrealistic timelines, and ghosting employees is completely unacceptable!

      Interview

The interview process for a Portfolio Manager position typically begins with an initial screening call from a recruiter or HR representative. This conversation is used to confirm your qualifications, understand your current role and investment background, and align on expectations such as compensation and interest in the position. From there, you’ll likely move on to a first-round interview with the hiring manager or lead portfolio manager. This stage involves a deeper discussion of your investment philosophy, portfolio construction process, performance history, and approach to managing risk. You may be asked to walk through specific investment decisions, explain your views on current market conditions, and describe how you generate and evaluate new ideas.

      Question 1

If you reach the final round, you may meet with senior leadership or the Chief Investment Officer (CIO). This conversation typically focuses on your strategic thinking, leadership qualities, and how your experience and approach align with the firm's broader goals. You may be asked to discuss your long-term investment views, regulatory awareness, or even your ability to bring or grow client relationships.
