      Security Engineer Interview

      13 Mar 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Flywire

      Interview

I interviewed at flywire in feb 2021 for a security engineer role. Currently I have 6 years of experience. I went through the interview process which consisted of a screening interview with the recruiter, an interview with the security team in Valencia and finally an interview with the hiring manager (the “security architect”). During the second interview with the security team, they asked me general security questions about my experience and the tools that I use day-to-day. They asked me about tools that they were looking into using and what my opinion of those tools was. They told me that ultimately if I was chosen for the role I would have an unlimited budget for choosing the tools and vendors to cover flywire’s incident response and threat intelligence needs.
During the second phase, the security team admitted that flywire has never undergone a red teaming engagement or basic threat hunt in any form. Apparently, they spend all their time working on-site reliability issues. This was very concerning since at the time of writing flywire is allegedly worth $3B but has a security team of only 8 people. Other organisations of lesser value have more mature security teams than this. This was quite pathetic considering flywire was toting their intentions to IPO at some point in 2021. As a take-home assignment, the "security lead" asked me to write incident response playbooks for all of the major threats that a fintech should be concerned about. Again highlighting that she had literally no idea what to do and that it was very likely that Flywire had no IR capabilities in place.
All of these things combined highlighted how immature their security posture was and that their security team had absolutely no fking idea what they were doing. In the end despite all of this free consulting they asked me if I would be willing to take an entry-level salary. Obviously I said no since no security professional who is ACTUALLY a security professional would accept that offer. Then no more than ten minutes after the call I received an email saying that they were going to go with someone more experienced (?!?!).

Sorry what? Someone more experienced than me accepted an entry-level salary? BS!

 SUMMARY:
You do not want to work here.
The security team has no idea what they are doing.
The existing security posture appears to be zero.
I was conned into free consulting work.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked no typical interview questions. They basically just asked for advice on IR, CTI, SecOps tooling and processes but framed the questions like it was an interview.
