Started out with an email and then phone call with the hiring manager. Hiring manager was easy to talk to and seemed to know what he was doing, asked questions about statistics and to get an idea about what tech skills you might know. After this conversation I was pretty excited about the company and wanted to work with this person. He seemed to have thought through his interview process. Was then asked to complete a take home assignment.
After submitting the assignment this is where things started to break down. I was asked to interview with two more people. This time with a software engineer and then a manager. The software engineer did not seem to know what a data scientist does, and asked a lot of CS related questions because that is what they knew. Typically when a company gives you a take home assignment, there are not additional whiteboard style questions. I expected to talk more about the assignment and my approach, but clearly this individual was not connected to what has been said or done in my previous conversations with the hiring manager. They also seemed very interested in deep learning and AI, which was not part of any job description or previous conversation, asked questions like you might expect if you heard about deep learning and AI in the media. This individual was clearly not a people person, very awkward and refused to show his face on the video call. Not someone who should be interviewing candidates.
Finally I was to speak to a manager who did not show up for the first scheduled interview and then rescheduled two more times before finally getting to talk to them. I found the whole process pretty disorganized and each person was pretty disconnected to the whole process. Also did not understand why they wanted to video interview only to not even use the video feature.
Finally after spending time talking to three individuals, several reschedules and a take home assignment they ghosted me. I can maybe understand ghosting a candidate that has not taken anyone's time, but after so much at least they could send an email rejection?
For a company that has been in business for such a long time, formerly ServiceMaster Global Holdings, Inc. they were very unorganized and unprofessional.
