      Software Engineer Interview

      23 Jan 2026
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Arlington, TX
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at GM Financial (Arlington, TX) in July 2024

      Interview

Attended 4 rounds of interview. My opportunity was declined due to my visa status [F1]. Evaluating candidates based on visa status has hindered my career. Interview process was friendly and smooth.

      Interview

Record a video interview answering questions sent over by the recruiter. Simple, low stress, but it is probably screened by AI which makes it more difficult to land a role.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at GM Financial in Apr 2025

      Interview

Applied on career website, passed Online Assessment, contacted by recruiter for pre-screen, then scheduled virtual technical interview. I believe I answered all technical questions well. For the coding exercise portion, I had been explicitly told that I could use the language of my choice. However upon opening the coding environment, both the Python and JavaScript environments (my preferred languages) were clearly missing variables/class injections that were necessary to complete the given problem. I had to use Java/Spring Boot as it was the only working environment. I wrote perfect semi-pseudocode. I simply asked for the name of a method as I do not have (nor claimed to have) Spring Boot experience, and this was all I would have needed to pass the exercise. The interviewer responded with "Oh I don't know Java". I was surprised that I was being judged on a language and framework unknown to the interviewer. I understand that not passing the tests would mean automatic fail most likely, I just wish that I had been given a fair chance.
