      2nd Assistant - Tailoring Interview

      28 Apr 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Glyndebourne

      Interview

VERY disrespectful, not the job advertised and to top it all off they made racist comments towards me and my "incomprehensible accent". The role advertised was not what they were looking for - the ad was for a trainee role for somebody with little experience, but in the interview they grilled me about my experience. I know for a fact that I didn't just read the job ad incorrectly as a friend of mine with Zero tailoring experience also got an interview (but couldn't attend interview due to cost of flights). I am from a different country and flew over specially for this interview - costing me over 500 euro. I even brought samples of my tailoring on the plane. Every time I mentioned that I was from another country they responded aggressively - eg, when asked what tailor I trained under, I gave the name of my tailoring lecturer in college. They said they'd never heard of her, in a tone like they thought I was lying, and I explained how she lives in my country and is a top tailor there, and they seemed almost pissed off with me that they couldn't contradict me. They laughed at me and said they couldn't understand a word I was saying because of my "incomprehensible accent" which, by the way, I was doing my best to tone down. After the interview, one of the interviewers walked me back to the bus and completely blanked me the whole way, refusing to respond to me when I made small talk. I have never had such a bad experience - it was so humiliating after I spent over 500 euro of my own money to attend. I have told everybody I know and I will never work for this company, and hopefully neither will they. Also; opera is an extremely international art form and if they can manage to be racist to me, the palest Irish person alive, I would never trust these people to be respectful towards the international actors they have to work intimately with.
