Interview
The interview process was long but not too unusual for a product designer role in tech. First was an initial phone interview with a recruiter, then a portfolio review over zoom with a design lead, and then a four part back-to-back "on-site" (currently virtual in covid times) interview that consisted of a values alignment interview, a UX whiteboard challenge, another design leader interview, and another portfolio presentation but this time with a panel of other designers. My only complaint is the long wait times of no contact inbetween rounds where I twice had to bother my recruiter after two weeks of silence.

Normal stuff like "Why are you interested in working at Gusto" and "Tell me about yourself"
I was also asked about how I receive constructive feedback from leadership and how that's helped me grow and was expected to be able to communicate things like the complexity, teams, trade-offs, roadblocks, and impact of my portfolio projects.
Standard design interview prods, with a portfolio/ case study review at the end. Team was friendly, recruiter professional and communicative, and scheduling was convenient. I didn’t receive an offer or an explanation of why they passed, which was fine.
average difficulty process but the higher level leaders in the portfolio review session seemed disengaged and disinterested in seeing my work, asking few questions and only looking for visual wow factor

Walk us through a project where you worked on a data-heavy product
Don't bother applying here. Their website says that they welcome people with all backgrounds and experience levels but who they actually hire is another story.
If you're not coming from a FAANG company or just graduated from the top 1% of colleges, they're just interviewing you to pat themselves on the back saying that they welcome all experience levels.
